The Student Of The Year, Vukota Markišić: “The most important thing is to create and develop your thinking process”

Vukota Markišić

Vukota Markišić is the top student (Valedictorian) of the Technical School "Ivan Sarić", where he studied information technology electrotechnics for the past four years. He chose this field of study because he was interested in programming, and it opened up so many opportunities for him that he never expected.

"I love programming because there are a million ways to solve the same problem. Each of us has a different thinking process, and when I was in school, I always tried to do it myself, even if my way was 200 lines longer than the teacher's. I prefer to learn by understanding what I write, rather than just copying what the teacher writes. I think that's the most important thing, to develop the thinking process," says Vukota.

The knowledge he gained in school, as well as his great curiosity and constant need for improvement, helped Vukota to become one of the proud creators of the video game "Ghost Chase", which he made together with David Šimoković and Leon Mandić as part of the "LAUDA" workshop.

"Leon did the whole design for the game, he drew everything, because we decided to make it pixel art, while David and I were responsible for programming. We made it as a speedrun game with three levels, and the goal is to finish them as fast as possible without being caught by the ghost, which is why it's called that way. Each team presented their project at the end of the workshop, and we won first place. We uploaded the game on itch.io, and anyone who wants to can download and play it," explains Vukota.

Vukota Markišić is very passionate about the web, and in his free time, he learns how to create websites. He is also interested in photography and film, and during his studies, him and his friends made a short film on the topic "What Drives Me," which won third place at a national competition and first prize in another competition.

"I've been filming since I was little, I always loved it, but only recently I bought my first camera, and that was actually my first big project. The film shows a girl who is initially sad, lying in bed and scrolling through Instagram. Suddenly, a book lights up and catches her interest, and when she opens it, a butterfly flies out. That butterfly is what drives her, and wherever she goes and whatever she does, it's there as a metaphor for motivation. We filmed the movie with a drone, made some transitions, and had some computer-generated elements that no one else added to their movies. I've always wanted to do that, but it's actually very difficult, and I stayed up until three in the morning watching tutorials, editing, and creating, but in the end, I succeeded," says Vukota.

Vukota Markišić is one of the 12 students of the year awarded by the organization "IT Subotica 2030" as part of the "Students Of The Year" project. In the future, he would like to work in programming, which is why he will enroll in information technology at the Faculty of Science in Novi Sad, and sees himself in Subotica in 2030.

"I'm from Lovćenac, but I've been here for four years, and I like the city. It's not too urban, it's peaceful, and I like that. Now that we've been to 'Digital Hive,' I was fascinated by how beautiful it was and how good the work environment is, and it's my dream to work in a place like that," says Vukota.
